Another day, another leak — this time, a set of new images that purportedly depict Nokia’s next set of Lumia smartphones have begun to make the rounds. Coming from a random Twitter source (planned corporate or PR leaker?), these images are reportedly of the 4.3-inch Nokia 820 and the 920 PureView, the latter of which apparently packs Nokia’s super imaging system. These phones were supposed to be revealed for the first time at a September 6th event. Whoops.

Nokia knows how to make a good-looking phone. Starting with the N8 in 2010, Nokia has since outed several innovative and fresh smartphones. The latest seem more of the same. That’s a good thing. Just like their predecessors, these are fantastic looking phones. Well done, Nokia.

The 4.5-inch 920 will no doubt be the Lumia’s flagship and likely equipped with everything Nokia can throw into a phone. This phone reportedly packs Nokia’s breakthrough PureView technology, which utilizes a crazy amount of megapixels in a practical way. After spending sometime with the bulky PureView 808, we’re still a bit curious how Nokia managed to cram the necessary bits into the slender frame. But man, we hope these leaks are legit.

Windows Phone 8 is shaping up to be a fantastic mobile platform and these devices with their good looks and superstar optics could be just what it needs to properly combat Android and iOS.

Samsung wins patent case against Apple in Japan

TOKYO: A Tokyo court has ruled that Samsung Electronics' mobile devices did not violate an Apple patent, awarding the South Korean firm a victory a week after it lost a landmark patent case in the United States.

The Tokyo District Court's ruling on an Apple patent dealing with transferring media content between devices comes after a US federal jury found last week that Apple did not infringe on any of Samsung's patents, while the South Korean firm had copied key features of the popular iPhone.

The US jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages and it is now seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones in the US market.

Eight Samsung Phones facing immediate Bans!

Apple is seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones, moving swiftly to translate its resounding court victory over its rival into a tangible business benefit.

The world's most valuable company wasted no time in identifying its targets on Monday: eight older-model smartphones, including the Galaxy S2 and Droid Charge. While Apple's lawsuit encompassed 28 devices, many of those accused product
s are no longer widely available in the world's largest mobile market.

Although Samsung's flagship Galaxy S III phone was not included in the trial, the jury validated Apple's patents on features and design elements that the US company could then try to wield against that device. Apple may not have to seek a new trial over the S III, but can include it in a "contempt proceeding" that moves much faster, according to legal experts.

Many on Wall Street believe Apple now has momentum behind it in the wake of its near-complete triumph over the South Korean company on Friday.

"The evidence and weight of the case are heavily in Apple's favor," said Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek. "We expect there's a two-thirds chance of an injunction against Samsung products."

An injunction hearing has been set for September 20. If US District Judge Lucy Koh grants sales bans, Samsung will likely seek to put them on hold pending the outcome of its appeal.

Samsung said it will take all necessary measures to ensure the availability of its products in the US market. A source familiar with the situation said Samsung has already started working with US carriers about modifying infringing features to keep products on the market should injunctions be granted.

Apple's win on Friday strengthens its position ahead of the iPhone 5's expected September 12 launch and could cement its market dominance as companies using Google Inc's Android operating system - two-thirds of the global market - may be forced to consider design changes, analysts say.

Apple was awarded $1.05 billion in damages after a US jury found Samsung had copied critical features of the iPhone and iPad. The verdict could lead to an outright ban on sales of key Samsung products.

Apple's stock scored another record high on Monday.

While the victory does not cover new Samsung products including the Galaxy S III, Apple will push its case on these products in the near-term, Evercore Partners analyst Mark McKechnie said.

"While a ban would likely increase Apple's leading smartphone share in the US market, we believe this verdict could lead to Samsung also delaying near-term product launches as it attempts to design around Apple's patents," Canaccord Genuity analysts said in a note.

Apple's shares gained 1.9 per cent to close at $675.68, tacking on another $12 billion-plus to its already historically leading market value. Samsung lost about the same amount in market capitalization as its shares slid 7.5 per cent in Seoul.

Samsung shares rebounded 1.8 per cent on Tuesday.

"The ruling marks an important victory for Apple against Android. Competitors may now think twice about how they compete in smart mobility devices with the industry's clear innovator," Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes wrote on Monday. "If Apple forces competitors to innovate more, it could take longer for competitive products to come to market, and make it more expensive to develop them."

The victory for Apple - which upended the smartphone industry in 2007 with the iPhone - is a big blow to Google, whose Android software powers the Samsung products found to have infringed on patents. Google and its hardware partners, including the company's own Motorola unit, could now face legal hurdles in their effort to compete with the Apple juggernaut.

Google shares closed 1.4 per cent lower at $669.22. Microsoft, a potential beneficiary if smartphone makers begin to seek out Android alternatives, ended up 0.4 per cent. Nokia, which has staked its future on Windows phones, gained 7.7 per cent.

Even Research in Motion - which has hemorrhaged market share to Apple and Google - climbed more than 5 per cent, before ending 2 per cent higher.

"The mobile industry is moving fast and all players, including newcomers, are building upon ideas that have been around for decades," Google responded in a Sunday statement. "We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that."

The verdict came as competition in the device industry is intensifying, with Google jumping into hardware for the first time with the Nexus 7 and Microsoft's touchscreen-friendly Windows 8 coming in October, led by its " Surface" tablet.

Samsung, which sold around 50 million phones between April and June - almost twice the number of iPhones - will have to pay damages equivalent to just 1.5 per cent of the annual revenue from its telecoms business.

"The verdict does not come as a surprise," wrote William Blair & Co analysts. "From Apple's perspective, Samsung's market position and its leadership in the handset world was something the company could no longer overlook, and viewing this as another 'imitation is a form of flattery' was not possible."

"Companies such as Samsung, who we categorize as fast followers, have been viewed by the industry for their ability to quickly adopt the latest handset trends ... rather than their ability to introduce fundamental innovation."

Windows Phone 8 SDK may be released at the Visual Studio 2012 launch event on the 12th September

The last we heard the Windows Phone 8 SDK was to be released in mid-September. Now the Visual Studio team have been posting about developing for Windows Phone 8, noting the Visual Studio Virtual Launch Event will feature details on C++ development in Windows Phone 8.

Given that the virtual event will be on the 12th September is seems a rather convenient date to release the Windows Phone 8 SDK also, which is of course needed to develop for the new features of the new OS.

With Windows Phone 8 handsets expected to hit the market within a few weeks to a month after this it is likely there will be little software initially to take advantage of the great new features in Windows Phone 8, but there have been rumours that some trusted developers have had access, which does mean we should see some big-name titles out of the gate exploiting the new OS.

Microsoft developer evangelist says Windows Phone SDK will only arrive after mid-September

We have been burned by Microsoft developer evangelists before, so take this with a large measure of salt.

Walter Novoa, Microsoft employee and Developer Evangelist in Columbia, has posted on his MSDN site that the Windows Phone 8 SDK will not be ready until mid-September.

This will leave developers with only a few weeks between the release of the final SDK and the arrival of Windows Phone 8 handsets on the market.

Of course unlike Windows Phone 7 there is already more than 100,000 apps in Marketplace, making the Windows Phone 8-specific apps less than urgent, but is seems Microsoft is cutting it pretty close for the phone operating system which is meant to save Windows Phone and Nokia.

Disney Clones Human Faces to Make Life-Like Robots

Disney Research in Zurich, Switzerland, has developed a new process called “Physical Face Cloning” that allows it to create realistic animatronic characters. The technology scans the head of a human before putting the coordinates and expressions into a 3D program.

Measurements such as skin and thickness are then used to produce a 3D printed mold of the face before a silicon layer of syntheic skin is attached. The result is a realistic-looking robotic head with accurate expressions and features such as wrinkles.

Disney will use the technology and process to produce life-like animatronic figures in its theme parks to add to the realism of the interactive characters. Watch the video below to see the entire process.

Digital Bracelet Detects If Medical Staff Need to Wash Their Hands

Israeli startup company Hyginex has developed a simple system to reduce healthcare risks around hospitals and medical practices. The company has created digital bracelets that work alongside sensor-embedded soap dispensers to detect if the user has washed their hands properly.

The non-intrusive bracelet has a tiny red LED light to also remind the medical practitioner to wash their hands between patients.

The technology works via a wireless connection and the hygiene regime is tracked and passed on to hospital managers. According to the CDC, poor hand hygiene lead to infections that are responsible for more than 90,000 deaths per year in the U.S., a cost of more than $30 billion.

Efrat Raichman founded Hyginex in 2008 after her uncle contracted an infection in a hospital and passed away. She believes that the bracelet will not only save lives, but also save the healthcare system a lot of money.

Facebook Trumps Yahoo as Second Most-Popular Video Site

Facebook has overtaken Yahoo as the Internet’s most popular site for viewing video last month, according to report from comScore.

According to comScore, Facebook saw a bit more than 53 million unique viewers throughout July, compared to Yahoo’s less than 49 million. Google, thanks largely to YouTube, still enjoys a comfortable lead in the race with nearly 157 million total unique viewers.

Yahoo users, however, watched more videos — 625 million to Facebook’s 327 million. Facebook users watched an average of 21.7 minutes of video throughout July, while Yahoo users consumed 70.4 hours of video content.

ComScore’s statistics only included what it calls “content videos,” not advertisements.

Other interesting stats from comScore’s July report: A vast majority — 85.5% — of Internet users watched videos in July, while video ads made up 20.7% of all videos viewed online but only 1.6% of time spent watching online videos.

5 SMS per day limit comes into effect-

In a very insane move by the Indian Government, a limit of 5 sms per day has been imposed on GSM and CDMA mobile users of India. From August 18, 2012, mobile users can send only 5 sms per day to the maximum after which the messages don’t get delivered with a prompt indication from the mobile operator.

The move was made by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to curb the spread of rumors which was meant to spread fear and to vacate North Eastern Indian’s from certain states. Home Ministry said that the rumors led to the flee of North East Indian’s from states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra and hence the move was necessary. The rumor SMSs contained misleading information related to Assam Violence

The restriction does not apply on the transaction SMS related to Banking, Financial Institutions and Railway alerts.

Moreover, one cannot send more than 20 KB of data, not more than 5 MMS per day as well. According to some reports, the rule has not yet been implemented by Airtel, in some parts of the country.

When the 6th message was tried from Aircel, the following message was sent by the operator.

“Due to Govt. directives, More than 5 SMS per day are blocked. Please retry tomorrow. Anticipate your co-operation.”

Other operators will come up with a similar message ” Hi! You have sent 5 SMS today. As per Govt. guidelines, you can’t send more than 5 SMS today. Your SMS services will be resumed post Midnight.”

No inputs about what the existing users will do about their SMS Booster Packs which allows them to send 100 or 200 SMS per day depending on the pack. The money won’t be refunded and the validity of the pack can’t be extended either!

It’s a very disappointing news for Indian Youngsters! There seems to be no point in curbing the SMS limit to 5 per when already there has been a limit of 200 per day.
